How do I carry out an emergency stop?

There's a 1-in-3 chance that you'll be asked to complete an emergency stop in your driving test. Your instructor will make you aware beforehand, so it won't come as a surprise. As emergency stops will be used in day-to-day life even after you pass your test, it's crucial you know how to do them safely.

When it's safe to carry out an emergency stop, apply the brake firmly. It's important to keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Just before the car comes to a stop, apply the clutch to avoid stalling. Once the car is stationary, apply the handbrake and put the car in neutral. In the driving test, you won't fail if the car stalls during an emergency stop.
